# What is AI Lab

> Meet Polaris (北极星), the AI Lab assistant — edit your resume in place through conversation, with every change proposed first and rejectable. It's the entry point to every AI capability.

**AI Lab** is Magic Resume's AI assistant, and its character is **Polaris (北极星)** — a little pixel north-star pet. Open it with the **AI Assistant** button in the editor. It's not a cold form-filler — it's a partner that **edits the resume with you**.

When it opens, it asks:

> Hi — what would you like your resume to become today? Tell me your goal and I'll pick the right skills and work on it with you.

Say what you need in plain words; it does the work.

<Warning>
  AI Lab needs **cloud mode** — [sign in](/en/guide/account) with the backend online (ready on the official magic-resume.cn). **Signed out (local mode) there is no AI at all** — you can only edit and export resumes.
</Warning>

## Set up AI (once signed in)

Once signed in, AI runs on the backend — power it one of two ways:

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Use internal credits" icon="wallet">
    Signed-in accounts get some free quota; when it runs out, **add credits / subscribe to Pro** for more. Your **remaining quota** is in the account menu.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Use your own key" icon="key">
    Go to **Settings → Model Configuration** and paste your own API key (OpenAI / Anthropic / Gemini, etc.). **The key is stored only in your local browser, never uploaded.**
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

<Note>
  If neither is set, AI pauses and shows "Account credits are unavailable" — do one of the two above to continue.
</Note>

## Five things it can do

Just say it in AI Lab, or click the matching suggestion:

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Create from scratch" icon="wand-magic-sparkles" href="/en/guide/ai-create">
    "Walk me through building a resume from zero" — a Q\&A builds your first draft.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Tailor to a job" icon="bullseye" href="/en/guide/ai-optimize">
    Paste a target JD / company / role and it reshapes your resume to fit.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Deep analysis (a score)" icon="chart-line" href="/en/guide/ai-analyze">
    Three virtual interviewers score your resume and flag strengths and gaps.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Translate" icon="language" href="/en/guide/ai-translate">
    Translate the whole resume into English / Japanese / Korean / French, etc.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Mock interview" icon="comments" href="/en/guide/ai-interview">
    Run a round of Q\&A based on your resume.
  </Card>

## Key: changes are proposals — you decide

This is a Magic Resume principle — **AI is a collaborator, not autopilot**:

* **In place, not in a separate window**: with the **Live canvas**, AI marks what to change right on your resume on the right.
* **Proposed first, rejectable**: every change is shown with a reason; you can **Apply to resume** or skip it. The top shows "**N changes pending**".
* **New chat anytime**: click **New chat** to clear the current session and start over (this clears this resume's AI history and analysis, and can't be undone).

<Tip>
  AI produces a **draft**. When it finishes it says "A resume draft has been generated"; only when you click **Apply to resume** does it land on the resume — not happy? Keep asking it to revise.
</Tip>
